About the Owner:
Carolyn Alter is the founder and proprietor of Alter's Violin Shop. Carolyn's love of the violin began over 35 years ago with her first lesson at the age of 8. Since then, she has earned her Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Wichita State University, and has graduated from the Red Wing Technical Institute's Musical String Instrument Repair school.

In 1990 she founded Alter's Violin Shop as a means to integrate her knowledge and talents as educator, musician, and repair technician.

Carolyn is an active musician, and has been a violinist with the Northland Symphony Orchestra for over 15 years.

She also enjoys spending time with Poco and Mitzie, her Cairn Terrier friends. Poco and Mitzie enjoy getting to meet, greet, and entertain customers and are eager to perform their tricks (for tasty treats, of course)!

Founded by Carolyn Alter in 1990, Alter’s Violin Shop began as a repair facility, and customer demand quickly required it grow to accommodate those seeking to purchase quality instruments, bows, cases and accessories.

The thread which runs through all our years of doing business is our consistent commitment to excellence. Excellence in the tone, quality, set-up and variety of our instruments. Excellence in the quality and variety of bows, cases, and accessories we sell. Excellence in our repair work, rooted in the foundation of our beginning as a repair facility. Excellence is achieved as we serve the basic maintenance needs of our customers (bow rehairing, new bridges, soundpost adjustment, cleaning and polishing), through the more intensive repair and restoration needs.

Our customer base is varied and growing. We serve everyone from the beginner to the professional, and we serve players from a variety of musical genres.
